On the proposed MRT/LRT fare hikes
Let us postulate that one wanted to get from Makati (Glorietta) to Quezon City (Trinoma) on a non-rainy Saturday night, at around 9:00 PM (as I recently did). Here is what the trip would cost in pesos and minutes.
- Air-conditioned bus: Fare: PhP33.00; Approximate duration: One hour
- MRT: Fare: PhP15.00; Approximate duration: 20 minutes
Now, I realize that anecdotal evidence has extremely limited representativeness value, but people do pay for the PhP33.00 ride, even if it takes an hour, so it seems reasonable enough to suppose that people will pay the same amount (if not a higher one) for a trip that is five times as fast.
More thoughts on the matter at a later time.
